Kouryssos, officially the Kingdom of Kouryssos (Kouryssan: Βασίλειο του Κουρυσού), is a sovereign island nation-state located within the Süd Depths. Part of the Kouryssos archipelago are two other smaller independent city-states, Ialoupoli and Salonesos.

A chain of mountains extends across the center of Kouryssos in an east-west direction. The highest point is Mount Eriopis, which rises 2,456 meters (8,058 feet) in central Kouryssos. Fertile valleys and plains lie among the mountains, which drop off sharply to the sea along the southern coast. The mountains slope more gradually in the north, and a narrow plain extends along the northern coast.

Kouryssos has a mild, dry climate. Temperatures average 12° C in summer. Rain falls chiefly from Ardamítis (October) to Ardios (March) and is heavier in the mountains than on the plains and valleys. A number of farming areas in Kouryssos require irrigation because they do not get enough rain. Windmills furnish power for the irrigation systems.

A lot of the peasantry in Kouryssos work on small farms and do much of the work by hand. The main crops are fruits, including grapes, olives and oranges. A variety of vegetables make up the remainder. In the southern cities, factories process food and make building materials, while in the northern coastal cities, metalworking takes place in the form of fabricating components for steamships. The numerous shipyards provide repair services as well as shipbuilding. Kouryssos gets most of it's revenue from maritime shipping. Bulk and passenger steamships based in Kouryssos operate all over the Süd Depths.

Politics and Administration

Kouryssos is a constitutional monarchy headed by the King, Aristophanes I. King Aristophanes enjoys wide executive powers which include appointing the Chief Magistrate and his ministers, commanding the army, chairing the Higher Judicial Council, appointing the parliament's upper house and dissolving its elected lower house. The head of government is the chief magistrate.

Kouryssos has a bicameral legislature, consisting of the Senate with 40 seats and the Council of Representatives with 40 seats. The forty members of the Senate (called Senators) are appointed by the king. In the Council of Representatives, 40 members (called Citizen Tribunes) are elected by absolute majority vote in single-member constituencies to serve four-year terms. The appointed council "exercises a de facto veto" over the elected, because draft acts must be approved so they may pass into law. After approval, the king may ratify and issue the act or return it within six months to the legislature where it may only pass into law if approved by two-thirds of both councils.
