The Ucayare people are an indigenous group in central Sante Reze, namely Sante Reze. They are the most populous indigenous group in the Ucayare rainforest, and are the namesake of the region. Their language is a member of the Roqzi language family. The Ucayare refer to themselves as "Yariri," which means simply means "people" in their Roqzi dialect.

History

Modern Ucayare population

Most people of Ucayare descent live in traditional villages deep in the rainforest, and as such their actual population is uncertain. They have adopted many modern conveniences which do not specifically require electricity, though some villages do run generators.

Humanitarian organizations, specifically the Sosete Umanitarie dSante Reze, have also provided contacted tribals with the capacity to have wind and solar energy, though these are typically used sparingly.

Housing

Traditional Ucayare houses are square structures built seven feet off of the ground on permanent cross beams, and are frequently wedged between trees for added support. To reduce the effect of the heavy rains in the forest, the roofs are steep and run well past the walls to funnel rain away from the stilts. Though tribes possess modern tools, these houses are not typically built using nails or screws.

Family

The Yariri family is traditionally nuclear and monogamous. Marriage typically occurs at a younger age than that of Sante Reze, somewhere between fourteen and sixteen, and gender roles are strictly defined. While women are accorded respect in traditional villages, typically being those who run village affairs, societal expectation leads them to be more isolated from the outside world.
