After the resignation of PM Ursula Kummstein on January 25, 2011, the Federal Chamber elected Rautenberg on February 1, 2011 with 266 votes in favor as the 13th Prime Minister of the Federal Republic. On the same day he was sworn in as Prime Minister by President Hans Kiesinger.

At the extraordinary party conference of the FBBP on March 3, 2011, Rautenberg was elected official party chairman with around 97.8 percent of the delegate votes. After Kummstein's resignation, Rautenberg was from January 25, to March 3, acting party chairman of the FBBP.

Personal life

Rautenberg married Katharina Gurke on October 4, 1998. In 2000 their son Hannes Rautenberg was born.
