Gonece (/ˈdʒɔːˈniːz/ joh-NEE-ss; Dahemian: Gëinen [ˈgəiːnen]; Ruthish: Geinen [ˈgaɪnɛn̩]; Hyacinthean: Gonéce [ʒɑ̃nes]) is the capital city and most populous municipality of Dahemia with 626,915 inhabitants in 2021, straddling the shores of the river Lonane. Comprising approximately a quarter of the country's entire population, Gonece is Dahemia's primate city and the 11th-largest city in the Ruthish-speaking world. Generally considered to lie at the cultural, geographic and economic crossroads of Calesia, it is situated 162 km (101 mi) by road from Thessen, X km (X mi) from X, and X km (X mi) from X.
While previously having been settled by the Goneitii tribe, Gonece proper was founded by the Hernicians in the 1st century BC as Castrum Goneitiacum Domecanum. During the Middle Ages, the fledging settlement flourished as a regional trade hub and became an influential free imperial city and citadel. Gonece served as the capital of the Duchy, and later the Kingdom and People's State of Dahemia in the 18th and 19th centuries. Both its growing importance as a Calesian center of political power and the Industrial Revolution brought about a profound demographic boom; by 1900, it was the 3rd-most populous Ruthish-speaking city in the world after Thessen and X. Much of the historic city center was bombed and heavily damaged during the Great War, with many landmarks reconstructed in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Since 1940, the global city has been a major center for international politics and diplomacy. Gonece is the de facto main seat of the United Congress (alongside X), as well as several other intergovernmental organizations, such as the Central Commission for the Lonane and the International Human Rights Council, most of these located in the Zollhafen urban renewal district. The metropolitan region comprising 1.3 million inhabitants is part of a large conurbation extending towards Greven and Cherms, known as the Lonane Arc, and even beyond Dahemia's borders towards Thessen and X in West Ruthen, totaling a population of more than 6 million.
Gonece is a major continental hub for commerce and transportation. Gonece Airport is the busiest airport in the country, and one of the busiest in the world. The Port of Gonece is the second-largest on the Lonane after X. The city's central railway station, Geinen Hauptbahnhof, is the third-largest railway station in Calesia measured by floor area. As a notable financial center, it hosts a number of corporate headquarters and subsidiaries, is home to the Gonece Stock Exchange, and the Messe Geinen is one of the world's most influential trade fairs. The University of Gonece is one of Calesia's oldest and largest universities; other significant educational institutions include the Academy of the Arts and the Technical University.
Major attractions of the city include the Gonece Cathedral located on the Bendlerberg, the Royal Palace on Castle Square, the Marstall, the Zollhafen central business district skyline, the Weserath Gate, the Independence Column, the Kaiserallee main boulevard, and the Yinese community in Emmanuelsstadt (also called "Little Dongsing"). The urban landscape is characterized in part by extensive parks and green areas, including the Hofgarten, Wallanlagen, the Zitadellenpark surrounding the Donnerberg hill and the Gonece Citadel, the Volkspark, the Zoologischer Garten, and two botanical gardens (the Old Botanical Garden and the Palmengarten). Gonece's internationally renowned cultural institutions and venues include the New Opera, the Komödie in the Zeughausbau, the House of Cultures, the Historical Museum, the Borsigbau, the Donnerberg Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts in the Lobrechtbau, the Gregor Minsky Museum, and the Royal Library, one of the largest public libraries in the world.
