Law enforcement in Meridon is one of the components of the country's justice systems, serving as the enforcement arm of the country's judiciary. Law enforcement officials are employed by federal, territorial, and local governments and are primarily responsible for preventing and investigating criminal activity as well as enforcing and upkeeping laws and promoting general public welfare and safety. Increasingly in the modern era, police forces have played an increasing role in public welfare.
By and large, police work in Meridon is handled at the territorial and local levels, with specialized services and augmentations provided by certain federal agencies. Each territory is charged by law with maintaining a law enforcement agency, and many lower-level subdivisions will also maintain agencies as deemed necessary. Limited oversight and cross-branch coordination is provided by the Enforcement Integration Bureau (EIB), an agency of the federal Justice Department which primarily exists to encourage standardization, cooperation, and to assist in larger-scale policing efforts requiring the input of multiple agencies.
Virtually all police officers in Meridon carry firearms, although some police departments, especially in certain metropolitan areas such as Port Sistine and Marin Bay, employ unarmed personnel referred to as 'community resource officers' or 'police support officials' which conduct a variety of duties such as traffic enforcement and community engagement and outreach.
