The Kola is the upper house of the legislature of Alriika. Its members, known as Gávpotes, are elected in six year terms. The Senate considers legislation passed by the lower house of the Alriikan legislature, the Siida, and may approve, reject, or amend its proposals.
Members are democratically elected by proportional representation in elections held every six years. There are 150 seats, 76 of which are needed for a majority.
The Kola is presided over by the Speaker, who plays a central role in the process. The speaker does not participate in the debates or in the parliamentary committees. While the speaker is one of the elected representatives of the Kola, the speaker is expected to remain unbiased and objective regarding issues debated in the legislature. As the presiding officer, the speaker cannot vote. However, in the event of a tie the speaker could use their vote to break the deadlock. The current speaker is Norá Somby of the Liberals, who assumed the office on 9 July 2014 following the last general election.
