The 1960 Jabal Qassuon coup d'état refers to the successful seizure of power in Jabal Qassuon by the Republican Socialist Party of Jabal Qassuon. The planning and the unfolding conspiracy was planned and conducted by General Ameer Omar, a top military aid of Sultan Omar bin Bader Al-Qassuon I. The Sultan popularity among the populace had been in decline as his policy in the last decade had been accused of perverting Arab nationalistic ideals, particularly due to the accusation that the Sultan was "selling out" the country to foreign, imperial powers. Both Sultan Omar Prime Minister Mustafa Ahmed Jamal fled the city soon after the takeover. Prime Minister Mustafa was later found on the outskirts of the city in a car with Sultan Loyalists and was subsequently killed in the following skirmish. The whereabouts of Sultan Omar are still unknown, however he is believed to have fled the country entirely. General Ameer installed his brother, Abdul Rahem Omar, as president of the new republic beginning the Republican Socialist Party rule of Jabal Qassuon.
