A national anthem is a musical composition that, through legal recognition by a country's government or through conventional use by a people, attains the status of a national or state song. It generally takes the form of a patriotic evocation of said people or land, as well as their history, traditions, struggles and ethos.

National anthems are usually written in the most common language of the state, though some, like the national anthem of the Haliarchic State, may be written and sung in a formal or liturgical language. States with multiple national languages may have anthems with different lyrics depending on the language, or single lyrics with stanzas in different languages. Moreover, some states with ethnic or linguistic minorities may have more than one national anthem.
