Nikolian phonetic alphabet is a system of letter spelling used mostly in shortwave radio communication by the radio amateurs, emergency services and the military.
The system was standardised by the Ministry of Communications in 1965 as, thanks to the Nikolian multilingual community, there were numerous of different spelling alphabets depending on the language, users and part of the country. The system combined Nikolian and Mazurian existing phonetic alphabets into common sounding words, and partially removed the letters with diacritics for ease of communication.
In parallel to the Nikolian phonetic alphabet, international phonetic alphabet is also in use.
Phonetic alphabet
The Nikolian phonetic alphabet is based on a mix of Nikolian and Mazurian spellings of the letters using a common name or a word pronounced identically in both languages. Both Nikolian and Mazurian languages have additional letters in their alphabet, however, these were not placed in the standard phonetic alphabet, even though their spelling is sometimes used for clarification.
