'''Darwinschtad''' (/'dɑːwɪnʃtæd, Te Rova Lainer: ''Te Turanga Takamarua'' [tɛ tʉː'ɾɑŋɑ tɑkɑ'mɑɾʉɑ]) is the capital and largest city of [[South Neviersia]]. As of 2024, it has an urban population of 5,479,303, making it the fifth-largest city in Veropa. It is located in the Greater Darwin area, governed by the Greater Darwin Council, which encompasses Darwinschtad Council, and the administrative counties of Bolton, Epping, Kakapo and the Otāhei Peninsula, and which has a total population of 6,102,869 as of 2024.

The Darwinschtad metropolitan area, colloquially known as the ''Schtaderland'', has a population of 8,668,000. Other major urban centres within the Schtaderland include Eppingham, Bolton, Caerbangor, Port Andeagh, Caerkorry and Hurnstall. Riōn O'Leary and Tyler Innesford are the incumbent Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Darwinschtad.

The region has been inhabited by native Lainerovans for about 13,000 years as numerous nomadic tribes had settled in the area. During the conquest of Veropa in the 1700s and 1800s, various European and Asian powers fought over the region, including the Netherlands, Spain, France and the United Kingdom, with the latter being the most successful. Two major settlements were established by British colonists, roughly corresponding to the native Lainerovan settlements: Darwin, named after Charles Darwin, and Macarthur, named after the British pioneer David Macarthur. After a coup in [[Adel City|Adel]] in 1912, the then-capital of British Neviersia, Darwin was selected as the new capital city. However, neither of the two major towns could agree on which would take the seat of government. A new planned city, a few kilometres north of Darwin, was created. After independence and the Naming Conflict Wars, the three settlements sprawled across the county and the name "Darwinschtad" was chosen as the new name of the city.

Darwinschtad is situated in the southeast of the country amidst the Southeast Highlands, also known as the Seven Hills. The city is known for its hilly topography, with the Ingridton Hills integrated into the cityscape of the southeastern suburbs. The River Macarthur and River Morley flow through the city, with the former running through the Old Town (''Innerschtad'') and serving as a busy thoroughfare for ferries. The city's hot climate, along with its southern beaches, including Macarthur Beach and Kuluroy Beach, attracts many international tourists throughout the year. Port Macarthur is the busiest port in South Neviersia, and it provides ferry services to the Isles of Macarthur and Otāhei Town.

Transport for Greater Darwin (TfGD) is a government-subsidised public transport authority operating across the Schtaderland, responsible for the region's buses, trams, metro and commuter rail services. Its primary train station is Darwinschtadcentrale Station. The two major airports in the city are Darwinschtad Hedland International Airport and Darwinschtad North Airport. Public transport and cycling have become growing priorities in Darwinschtad since the 1980s. Over one hundred kilometres of dedicated bike lanes have been constructed between 1980 and 2020. The introducion of congestion charges and speed limit reductions since the 2000s have been controversial.

Darwinschtad is one of Veropa's 'Big Four' leading financial and cultural centres. The three Central Business Districts of Darwinschtad are Macarthur, Old Town (formerly Darwin Town) and Darwinschtadcentrale. Other suburban centres include Morlyton, Coltsmoor, Hornsby and Hedland, each with different styles of architecture, cuisine and arts. The city has a strong sports heritage, especially in association football and cricket. Darwinschtad United F.C., West Darwin F.C. and Morlyton Cricket Club are among the most supported sports teams in South Neviersia. Because of the proximity to various natural parks, particularly the Seven Hills, hiking, mountaineering, surfing and fishing have become pastimes for many Darwinschtaders. Darwinschtad consistently ranks among the world's most livable and desirable cities.

The name Darwinschtad did not appear until the 1930s. Prior to that, there existed two cities in the area: Darwin Town, named after Charles Darwin, much like its Australian counterpart), and the larger of the two, Port Macarthur, named after David Macarthur, a British pioneer in the area). As the two cities expanded, they were amalgamated into one political entity. The new name chosen was "Darwinschtad", Lainerovan étendard for "Darwin City". Despite Port Macarthur's prominence and larger size, David Macarthur advocated that the new city's name derive from Darwin Town because of its central location. As a compromise, he decreed that the city's Te Rova Lainer name be "Te Turanga Takamarua" (literally "the sheltered port") in honour of Port Macarthur in the city's southside.

Darwinschtad (pronounced [/'dɑːwɪnʃtæd], Te Rova Lainer: Te Turanga Takamarua [tɛ tʉː'ɾɑŋɑ tɑkɑ'mɑɾʉɑ]) is the capital and largest city of South Neviersia. As of 2024, it has an urban population of 5,479,303, making it the fifth-largest city in Veropa. Etymology

As a compromise, he decreed that the city's Te Rova Lainer name be "Te Turanga Takamarua" (literally "the sheltered port") in honour of Port Macarthur in the city's southside.

History

Geography

The Southeast Highlands, aptly known as the Seven Hills, refers to the hills of southeastern South Neviersia, which Darwinschtad is located in. The seven hills are the Epping, Kakapo, Caerbangor, Hurnstall, Otāhei, Powth and Ingridton. The Ingridton Hills are located within the city itself.

Climate

As with most of South Neviersia, Darwinschtad has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with warm, humid summers and drier, mild winters.

Governance

Darwinschtad's administrative structure comprises two tiers of governance. Darwinschtad Council is the citywide authority, with the present mayor as Riōn O'Leary of the Territorian Front political party, who was elected in 2023. The deputy mayor is Tyler Innesford. Local administration is carried out by the 24 district councils, most corresponding to the boundaries of the 26 districts in the city. They are responsible for most local services, including schools, leisure, recreation, roads, water and sewage, waste collection and local planning.

The city is also part of the wider Greater Darwin area, governed by Greater Darwin Council, one of the 11 regional authorities in the country. Its jurisdiction extends beyond the city into neighbouring administrative counties Bolton, Epping, Kakapo and the Otāhei Peninsula. Despite the separation of the Isles of Macarthur from the Greater Darwin Council in 2016, the city still provides ferry services to Fort Macarthur in collaboration with the county.
