The Tikvan Democratic Party (Yebru: מפלגה דמוקרטית) is the current governing party of the State of Tikva led by Prime Minister Liora Shapiro. The TDP was formed through the merger of a half-dozen left-leaning political parties during the October 2019 snap elections. It has enabled the left to form a united front against the fractured but no less dangerous coalition led by Jacob Lesker and other right-wing and extremist parties. It won 51 seats, out of 120 seats in the Knesset, making it the first time in over two decades the left held the most seats in the legislature (and certainly since 1968). It formed a coalition with Gesher to gain the ability to form a government. The Democratic Party is also called "the New Left," and its rise to preeminence has been called a realignment of modern Tikvan politics.
