Formed in the early 1920's, the Progressive Conservatives participated in numerous National Coalition-led governments as a minor partner. In the 1953, the resulting snap elections of that year propelled the first Progressive Conservative government of Adrian Thorne and remained in office until 1967. Another Progressive Conservative government was elected after the results of the 1979 election, with Mark Hawthorn becoming Chancellor. Hawthorn served from 1979 to 1980, when he was defeated by the Social Democrats after the 1980 federal election. In 1984, the Progressive Conservatives won with Brian Kariwase becoming Chancellor. Kariwase served as Chancellor from 1984 to 1993, and his government was marked by free trade agreements and economic liberalization. | |||
