Sekens or Seketese people are a North Nelbec ethnic group—native to the Nelborne—and nation identified with the country of Seketan. This connection may be ethnic, legal, historical, or cultural.
The heritage of Seketese people is primarily of Old Nelbec origin, whom descended from prehistoric cultures that emerged from the arrival of European migrants during the Ice Age. The Proto-Secenic language was the primary language of the Secenic Empire and the later Secenic Confederation. A Seketese nationstate emerged with the Kingdom of Seketan, with the national identity being further defined in the Seketese national awakening and the subsequent establishment of a liberal Seketese republic.
Sekens are often divided into sub-ethnic groups or "tribes" based on provincial or cultural boundaries. The government of Seketan recognizes Fjeskans and Wilsks—from the autonomous provinces of Fjeska and Wilskland respectively—as separate ethnic groups from "Sekens", but continues to classify them as "of Seketan". Whether Fjeskans and Wilsks are Seketese is dubious.
Geographic distribution
It is estimated that there are 10-12 million Sekens living in total.
Europe
Within Europe, Sekens are primarily concentrated in the Nelborne region of northwestern Europe. They are the largest Nelbec ethnic group. Seketan is the principle Seketese nationstate, with Sekens comprising more than 80% of the population. The Svealandic territory of Falanda, adjacent to the Seketese province of Fjeska, contains a significant Seken population with more than 40% of the population claiming Seken ethnic status. The Lormotian province of Luderan is predominately populated by Sekens due to the historic Seketese control of the area.
Diaspora
The Seketese diaspora is the global community of ethnic Sekens scattered across the globe. Large waves of emigration from Seketan have created Seketese diasporic communities in the United States and Canada.
Culture
Sekens hold a North Nelbec culture whose history spans millennia. The Seketese culture is evident in their literature, cuisine, music, religion, practises, holidays, and customs.
Languages
The Seketese language is the predominant first language of most Sekens, standardized by the Académie Secéteça and official in the Republic of Seketan. Sekens speaking Seketese speak the language in a variety of accents and dialects, with the standardized variety being based off the Gjenoreça dialect.
Many Sekens are native speakers of regional languages. The Bynanese language is predominately spoken by Sekens in the Seketese province of Bynan, but is legally recognized and colloquially referred to as a dialect of Seketese. Some native speakers of Fjeskan and Wilsk identify as Seken, although Fjeskans and Wilsks are recognized by the Seketese census as separate ethnic groups.
