History
The first organised intelligence with jurisdiction in what is now Sharifistan (then called Sipahistan) was Umur-u Hafiye of Sultan AbdulMecid II. After that, many Sharifistanis were involved in the Karakol Society during the Turkish War of Independence. The first Sharifistani agency was the Askeri İstihbarat Müdürlüğü or Directorate of Military Intelligence. This organisation was founded in 1922 and it was first used to be oppose foreign invaders and Communists, opposing fascists being added as a later priority in 1925. Throughout the Second World War it's main role was gathering intelligence against the Axis Powers: Germany, Italy and Japan. In 1950, the focus shifted once more to opposing communists and gathering intelligence on the Soviet Union. After 1995 the focus shifted to opposing Kurdish militias and after 1998 it also was instrumental in opposing groups that follow an extremist interpretation of Islam (Islam being Sharifistan's state and majority religion.) In 2020 the Directorate of Criminal Intelligence was established and both were absorbed into the Intelligence Directorate in February 2021.
Recruitment
While almost half (49.5%) are recruited from the Sharifistani armed forces or police, the majority are recruited directly from civilians (Sharifistani or foreign). Recruits who are not from the military are given a civil service rank, whilst recruits from the military or police either keep their old rank or are given a promotion. Police and military ranks are designed to have corresponding civil service ranks. Recruits must go through an intensive process: stringent vetting, resistance to interrogation training and complex assessments are all part of this process. Foreigners are usually no more restricted than Sharifistanis, however.
