After the end of the Sword's Republic and under the premiership of Félix Bragança, however, the CDNB underwent several reforms, curtailing its influence and reducing the organization's role only to specific military affairs.

CDNB membership changed over time since, unlike the State Council, there is no specific amount of members determined by the constitution. Currently, the CDNB is composed of both the president and premier of Belmonte together with the presidents of both houses of Congress, commanders of the three branches of the Armed Forces and the director-general of the SNI.

The National Defence Council (Luzelese: Conselho de Defesa Nacional, CDN) is the official advisory body of the President of Belmonte over military and security affairs regarding Belmonte's national sovereignty and integrity, working closely with the Armed Forces and other federal institutions.

History

The National Defence Council was established in the new Belmontese constitution in the aftermath of the Great War, serving as the successor of the Supreme Belmontese Military Council (CMBS in Luzelese) which was the main Belmontese military authority during the country's occupation by Entente forces at Operation Palmier, orchestrating resistance efforts between the remnants of the Armed Forces and resistance units within occupied territory.

During the URN dominance over national politics in the first years of the New Republic, the CDN would grow into little participation in political affairs to a relevant role in combating far-left and communist presence in Belmonte, working closely with the Federal Police, the SNI and the Armed Forces in general to combat them. The council also took an important role in the 1963 terrorist attacks, importance which only continued to grow in the 60s during the Bittencourt premiership.

It was only after the 1969 protests and the ascension of Aldo Silveira to the premiership that the CDN underwent several reforms, curtailing its influence and reducing the organization's role exclusively to military affairs.

Role

The CDN is the official advisory body of the President of Belmonte over military and security affairs, being responsible for advising the president in the events of declaration of war and proclamation of peace; attacks against Belmontese soil and personnel; the decreeing of a state of defence, siege or federal intervention as well as inform about the current status and development of the Armed Forces and other federal military and security institutions, meeting weekly and sometimes extraordinarily at presidential demand.
