The 99th Skandar Tactical Arctic Group is a joint Taskforce charged with protection of Skandar waters and land on the Antarctic continent. Staffed by members of the Skandaran Union, the brigade-sized formation is kept at high readiness and takes charge of anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue operations in the Skandar corridor of the southern ocean.
The unit was raised in 1978 to address concern of members of the Skanderan Union over the security of the Antarctic as a strategically important point that would allow agressors to remain hidden. These security issues were felt to be well founded, and was deemed too important a task for the Skanderan Legion, who lacked any significant maritime or air power to hunt submarines or engage significant forces directly. The purposral for a joint military unit was founded, and the unit became the 99th Artic Tactical group.
