Kriel's entrance in to Kleinberg politics was when he was a young man in Hanekom Universiteit, one of Kleinberg's most prestigous universities. Kriel joined a political youth organization called Baanbreken Studente vir Verwoerd, an advocacy group for the rising popular politician Bern Verwoerd, who inspired Kriel at once of his many speeches he would give around the country and at Hanekom.
