AleziRadio Festival of Songs 1981 is the twenty-fourth edition of the annual AleziRadio Festival of Songs. The competition is held by the authorities in Radio Basna Raya, which is a joint venture between three radios that was situated in Basna, which are Radio Basna Dalam (RBD), Radio Basna Kota dan Pesisir (RBKP), and Radio Basna Kepulauan Luar (RBKL). This means that this was the second time that the competition was held by a joint venture between radio stations.
The competition was supposed to be hosted in Hotel Terra-Berlian which also hosted the competition in 1964. This decision was made based on people who wanted to relive the past hosting of 1964. However, this plan had to be cancelled abruptly due to a fire that nearly destroyed its underground hall which happened five months before the competition. This forced Radio Basna Raya to be resourceful and search for other alternatives. Hotel Santander was still not completed at this point and it won't be completed until August 1981, three months after the competition ended. And thus it was decided that the competition would be held in the Pusat Budaya Basna (or Basna Cultural Centre in English)'s Auditorium, which could seat 1,500 people. Luckily, around that time, the authorities there just recently completed renovation of the interior, ensuring that quality is maximum.
According to Radio Basna Raya, the logo was intended to represent the era North Alezia was facing, which is an era of a new start as censorship started to be lifted in the country at the time. However, this doesn't mean that freedom of speech and press are fully opened around that time. The logo itself was designed by Soerapto Rahman, which has designed the logo of the City of Basna which was applauded for creativity and its unusual style. According to Soerapto, the logo was also supposed to represent simplicity and friendliness towards other regions. This theme of black background and white text and/or graphics inspired future Alezian works such as its first international hosting of the 93rd Worldvision Song Contest.
Tage Angström returned to the festival after earning 15th place last year, once again singing a song in Swedish. Other than that, Darov Yeshiru who earned last place in the 1964 competition also returned.
