He is a member of Parliament for Palia since 2012, and was the Minister of Education from 2015 to 2020. His political views have been described as democratic socialist. As an author, Canning is most known for his political works, both fiction and non-fiction, including Colourblind (2011), Survival of the Richest (2003), and Fighting Fire with Napalm (2014).
Canning was born in St. Peter and attended Saint Peter's Grammar School.
