Socialism in Ornivia originally started as a philosophical counter/rebellion from Liberalism, they argued that Liberalism and the Nationalists both embraced Capitalism, who's purpose was to exploit the working class, and could not be considered progressive as worker empowerment, equality, liberty and living standards could not be improved under Capitalism, demonstrated by Nationalist rule. Socialism was able to challenge the duopoly of philosophical and political thought enjoyed by Liberalism and Nationalism as there theories increased in popularity, though like Liberalism they faced heavy suppression towards the end of the 19th century as Nationalism and Militarism became more prevalent.
Social Democracy can trace its origins to the mid 20th century, where it developed as a branch of Socialism (which was first developed in the early-mid 19th century). Social Democracy had begun splitting off from the other two branches of Socialism during the Great Ornivian War. By the end of the Spring of Ornivia, Socialist leaders across Ornivia sought to mend the divisions in Socialism by calling the 2nd Ornivian Socialist and Communist Council in 1962.

During the early 20th century, a fundamental split occurred in the party due to this suppression. One side believed that Socialism could be implemented through Democratic means (Democratic Socialism), while the other side believed that Socialism could only be achieved through Revolution (Revolutionary Socialism). These two sides would soon drift further and further apart from each other during the early and mid 20th centuries, however the side in favour of Democratic reform became by far the largest of the two sides by the mid-20th century up to the Great Ornivian War
Rather then unite Socialism, it instead divided it permanently into three branches. Revolutionary Socialism, Democratic Socialism and the mentioned Social Democracy, of which now the majority of Socialists across the region now supported, and members abandoned the Council after 6 days. Social Democrats, unlike the other two branches, had argued that Socialists should fully cooperate with Liberals in rebuilding the region after the Great Ornivian War, as well as advocating for democratic participation and, importantly, supporting moderate policies. As Liberal Economic Policy known as Social Market Economy proved it can reasonably protect workers from the oppression and exploitation that occurred under Nationalism, Social Democrats abandoned most pretence in opposing Capitalism in its current form in Ornivia.

In the aftermath of the Spring of Ornivia, it had become evident that Socialism was fracturing, and as such the 2nd Ornivian Socialist and Communist Council was called in 1962 to mend this ties. Insted of this, half of the individuals representing parties and trade unions walked mid way through the 10 day event and renounced all allegiance to decisions made. These were the result of the rapidly rising popularity of Social Democracy, a third faction. They believed in Democratic means to power, like the Democratic Socialists, but unlike them they believed that they should be working with Liberals in rebuilding the region and that the Nationalist's were not capitalists. They also endorsed more moderate policies then other Socialists. Eventually, Social Democracy and Socialism would split off from eachother, as Social Democracy gained more and more support from Socialists throughout the 70s and 80s, as well as Social Market Economy proving that it can get results when it comes to worker empowerment and exploitation.
In 1969, Social Democrats in Ornivia formed the Ornivian Alliance of Progressives and Social Democrats, which acted as a region alliance of Progressive and Social Democratic Parties across Ornivia. While perhaps not as enthusiastic for integration as the Liberals, the Social Democrats nevertheless became important advocates for Ornivian integration. It was during this period of integration that the Social Democrats and Liberals would form a political friendship which now acts as one of the linchpins of modern Ornivian politics. By the 200s, Progressives supported the formation of an Ornivian Federation, and supported the Federation Conference in 2015, and would form the Alliance of Ornivian Progressives later in the year following the Conference's success. After Unification, the party supported Liberalist candidate Kevin Hartley in the 2025 Presidential Election, and would go on to become the third largest party in Parliament following the 2025 Parliamentary Election. While the ideals of social democracy were practiced by moderate trade unions and intellectuals before the Great Ornivian War, political suppression of left wing ideas had meant that by the late 19th century, the ideas of social democracy had, like the Liberals, been forced underground. During the Spring of Ornivia, Social Democrats made up the left wing of the movements that formed across Ornivia in alliance with the Liberals. Because of this, the relationship between the Liberals and Social Democrats is usually the strongest in parliaments across the Federation, and the Federative Parliament is no exception to this rule. Nevertheless they still do disagree on key issues. With its support base coming from most Ornivian Trade Unions and the Urban Poor, the Progessives make up the bulk of moderate left-wing Federative politics.
The Progressives follow the traditions of Social Democracy. Generally regarded as being a more left-wing alternative to the Liberals, the party tends to promote employee focused policy within the Ornivian Economic Consensus, which is a linchpin of Ornivian politics. This Consensus mandates the maintaining of Social Market Economy, as well as advocating for a balance between employee, employer and state interests in the economy. The Progressives are strong supporters of minority and LGBTQ+ Rights. The party after unification has argued for stronger federative powers, the legalisation of soft drugs, and a faster progression towards rehabilitative justice, among others. They have recently given its support for a Telrovan Assembly and South Elisian Regional Organisation.

The Alliance of Ornivian Progressives is a Centre-left federative political party in Ornivia, and is a Federation of Social Democratic and Progressive parties across Ornivia's member-states, as well as most of Ornivia's Trade Unions. It was formed in 2015 after the signing of the Treaty of Federation. The party as of the 2025 Parliamentary Election is the third largest in Parliament, and is currently coalition partners with the United Liberalist Party for the Federative Government.

As Liberal Economic Policy known as Ornivian Capitalism proved it can reasonably protect workers from the oppression and exploitation that occurred under Nationalism, Social Democrats abandoned most pretence in opposing Capitalism in its current form in Ornivia.

The party currently governs Ornivia under a coalition government with the United Liberalist Party.

The Progressives follow the traditions of Social Democracy. Generally regarded as being a more left-wing alternative to the Liberals, the party tends to promote employee focused policy within the Ornivian Economic Consensus, which is a linchpin of Ornivian politics. This Consensus mandates the maintaining of Ornivian Capitalism, as well as advocating for a balance between employee, employer and state interests in the economy.
