The monarchy of Ambrose was the hereditary institution that ruled Ambrose in various forms from the unification of the country under Ecgric the Terrible in the early 12th century to the fall of the Kingdom of Ambrosia following the Ambrosian Revolution.
The monarchy originated with the House of Rheneas (also known as the Ecgricine dynasty), which would continue by its male line through the medieval period. The monarchy was contested at several points in Ambrosian history, most notably during the Despenser War of 1320 to 1324. This conflict ultimately saw the House of Lyksborg accede to the Ambrosian throne, tying the Ambrosian monarchy to Archkingdom of Sjealand in a personal union. The Lyksborgs were deposed in 1673 by the House of Duncansby, who, tracing their ancestry to the Ecgricines of old, ruled until their own deposition in 1849.
The monarchs of Ambrose held various titles and pretensions. Initially claiming the title of King of Ambrose, in 1792, the House of Duncansby adopted the title King of the Ambrosians, as part of the shift towards popular, constitutional monarchy. The monarchs claimed the title of Duke of Northumbria from 1679, though only in pretence until 1756. Furthermore, from 1324 to 1673, the Kings of Ambrose also held the titles of the other constituent realms of the Kingdom of the Two Daughters.
