MalTra is a state-run company in the United Kingdom of Malgrave. MalTra was established during the foundation of the country to provide reliable public transportation within the newly established country, and was initially simply responsible for commercial rail services and the construction and maintenance of rail infrastructure, however, shortly after the Great Exodus its responsibilities were expanded to cover other forms of transportation and it now operates aviation, ferry and other forms of transport in the country.
History
MalTra was established as the Malgravean State Owned Rail Transportation, Infrastructure and Research Corporation (MSORTIRC) shortly after the Conference of Asola. Initially, the company was tasked with establishing the basic framework of a rail network to assist industrial, military and agricultural plans, however, as this was established it was also tasked with constructing light rail networks to aid workers and provide benefits to rural areas.
As a result, the work of MSORTIRC was instrumental during the conflict with the Imerians and the country even deployed armoured trains at points during the conflict, although, the most notable effort of MSORTIRC during this time was the efforts the company made to facilitate rail transportation to major ports during the Great Exodus.
After the reestablishment of the Malgravean state in 1933 following the Great Exodus, the pre-war work of MSORTIRC continued as they were tasked with establishing a new rail network to connect the new regions of their homeland. At the start of the civil war these plans were temporarily halted, however, within a few years this expansion continued at a greater pace as the rail network became tasked with carrying troops and equipment across the country to support the war efforts.
At the end of the civil war MSORTIRC was reorganised to integrate the railway networks of the Socialist Republic and National Workers' Republic. As part of these efforts MSORTIRC's responsibilities were also expanded to cover commercial aviation and ferry options, with the subsidiary MalAir being formed at this point.
In preparation for the end of isolation MSORTIRC started a series of infrastructure projects, a prime example being the modernisation of the route between Portmon and Aurora which resulted in the construction of one of the longest bridges in Malgrave. MSORTIRC also drew up a series of proposals outlining potential connections with neighbouring states, with one of these proposals resulting in the construction of the longest tunnel in Mystria which serves to connect the Kouralian capital of Kurton to Cerne in the Research Colony.
After exiting isolation, the renamed MalTra has assisted rail construction projects in D'hɑlbrisir, Mystrian Altea, Silverdale and the Dornalian Republic. MalTra is one of the most commonly used state-owned service in the country, and while its overseas operations make up a majority of the companies profits it is still a major employer in the country.
Controversy
When Prime Minister Alicja Kowalska changed the name of the then Malgravean State Owned Rail Transportation, Infrastructure and Research Corporation (MSORTIRC) to MalTra it caused small protests to break out in the capital city which quickly snowballed into larger demonstrations when government plans to rename other state-owned enterprises became known to the public.
MalTra has been accused of using its influence to maintain the prevalence of toll roads across the country and maintain the current levels of road tax, a constant complaint for Malgravean Automotive Industries and vehicular enthusiast organisations.
