Major Kaheka Makaiwi is a Kalean military officer. He was born on August 9, 1994, in Heiau, Hema, Kalea. He is the commanding officer of the 1st "Vangaurd" Brigade, 1st Division Expeditionary Force, KDF. He has served in Taupo and the Terehan War.
Early life and education
Kaheka Makaiwi was born on August 9, 1994, in Heiau, Hema, Kalea. Growing up in a middle-class family, he developed a strong sense of duty and a passion for serving his country from a young age. Kaheka was an exceptional student, known for his academic prowess and leadership skills. He graduated at the top of his class from Heiau Central High School and was subsequently admitted to the prestigious Heiau Military Academy.
Military career
Upon graduating from the Heiau Military Academy in January 2016, Kaheka was commissioned as an officer in the Kalean Democratic Forces (KDF). He chose the infantry branch as his primary field of specialization due to his desire to be at the forefront of defending his nation. Joseph quickly distinguished himself as a competent and fearless leader, earning the respect of his peers and superiors.
Humanitarian Aid in Taupo
When the Kalean Legislative Assembly voted to provide aid to the Taupo in March 2016, Kaheka volunteered to deploy with the Kalean Democratic Forces. While there, the humanitarian force's goals were to provide humanitarian aid to the Taupoese people. However, they soon became targets by anti-government groups. Dozens of Kalean had been wounded and killed in the time they were deployed. Kaheka's unit played a vital role in organizing medical supplies, establishing temporary shelters, and ensuring the safe delivery of food and water to the affected population. His unwavering commitment to serving the local community earned him widespread recognition and gratitude. While deployed, he met and befriended his superior officer Major Lokela Kamea. Just over three months into his deployment, he was wounded by a teenager who was part of an anti-government protest. He was sent home to recover in a military hospital due to his wounds. For their time in Taupo, everyone deployed in his unit was awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal.
Terehan War
During the Terehan War, which erupted in October 2022, Kaheka found himself thrust into the heart of the conflict, now promoted to the rank of captain. Serving as the executive officer in a frontline combat unit, he displayed remarkable leadership under intense pressure and demonstrated tactical brilliance in various engagements. Kaheka led his troops with valor, inspiring them to overcome daunting challenges and achieve significant victories. His ability to remain composed in the face of adversity earned him the admiration and trust of his fellow soldiers. His actions led to recieving a battlefield promotion to major. On December 5th, 2022, he witnessed the death of his commanding officer Colonel Kauhale Pilialoha, and Kaheka himself had been injured, although not seriously injured. After the death of Colonel Pilialoha, command of the 1st Brigade fell to Kaheka. During his deployment, he wrote letters and kept notes which later served as material in his book From Taupo to Terehan: A Combat Memoir that he published upon returning from deployment.
Decorations and awards
Kaheka was awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal for his deployment in Taupo, and the Meritorious Service Medal with commendations and the KDF Expeditionary Service Ribbon with commendations for his actions during the Terehan War.
