It is the main airport serving the Nakongese capital city of Ningcho, the surrounding North Bay region, and northern Nakong more generally. Opened in 1929 as Ning Chow South Aerodrome (later Ningcho South Airport), the airport was renamed in 1978 in honour of Harold Lam Ping-yuk, the founding Prime Minister of Nakong between 1958 and 1972.
