The QF 152 mm Mark 30A gun is an Illuverendian naval gun, developed in the mid-2040s and entered production in 2049. Despite a long, protracted design phase plagued by political instability and indecisions, it has been designated as the "standard" 152 mm (6.0 in) naval gun in use for the Royal Illuverendian Navy, owing to its autoloading nature and gun efficiency.
Design and development
Development of the Mark 30A gun started in the 2040s. The concept of autoloaded naval guns have been existent for a long time, and has been proliferated extensively by the existence of the lightweight Mk LXVI gun, which had been installed onboard the Type 32 and Type 33 destroyers. Consequently, the G and H class cruisers, were greenlighted by the Stratocratic Clique for production, and orders for a new design were quickly drafted, and strict orders to create a new gun were also stipulated.
In 2042, design on the G and H classes were suspended. This jeopardised the development of the Mark 30A gun, which was 75% complete at that time, and mockups had been made. Not wanting to lose progress, the Clique ordered a new type of light cruiser, the Iolanthe class. Development on the gun was accelerated, and by 2044, the Mark 30A completed design phase. However, the gun would not see production for several years, owing to the Stratocracy's constant unrest and hardships that escalated rapidly until 2047.
When the Stratocracy fell, the Royal Illuverendian Navy was once again reestablished. Its designers seized the Stratocracy Navy's plans, including that of the Mark 30A gun. Flaws in the design were found, especially in its autoloading mechanism. Two more years of R&D took place, and after passing rigorous quality checks, the gun finally began manufacturing for the new navy, which had just greenlighted the Cruiser Fleet Modernisation Project, ordering four cruiser classes, of which two were light cruisers: the Icarus class, and Nereides class, all taking inspirations from their cancelled Stratocracy counterparts.
Multiple prototype turrets were made in 2050, while the cruisers were under construction. Satisfied by performances during fire testing, it was greenlighted for standardisation, deprecating older 152 mm (6.0 in) guns.
