The Royal Illuverendian Navy (Illusian: Königliche Illuverendien Marine) is the current navy of Illusia and Neverendia, and the naval warfare branch of the Royal Illuverendian Armed Forces. The unified navy traces its origins from the Illusian Navy and the Royal Neverendian Navy, the navies of the independent Illusian and Neverendian states respectively, which were merged upon the Enigmastadt Declaration on 8 July 1796.
Ships of the Royal Illuverendian Navy are designated HMS, standing for His/Her Majesty's Ship; while the Illusian prefixes are either SMS/IMS, standing for Seiner/Ihrer Majestät Schiff; Seiner for male, 'His Majesty'; and Ihrer for female, 'Her Majesty', respectively. Internationally, the prefix used for them as mandated by the Royal Illuverendian Navy is HIvMS, for His/Her Illuverendian Majesty's Ship.
Prior to its founding on 8 July 1796, the Illusian Navy and Royal Neverendian Navy were its main predecessors. Both navies engaged in hostile combat during the turbulent Illusia-Neverendia War in the 15th century. One of the highly-revered naval battles of that time was the Battle of White Plains Harbour, where the Neverendian naval fleet defeated a vastly superior Illusian fleet within the waters of the then-Neverendian royal capital, White Plains. Each vied for supremacy over control of the seas much like their land-based military counterparts, with the Neverendians achieving naval supremacy at most, except one humiliating defeat during the Naval Battle of Enigmastadt. Despite the rather thin differences between the naval doctrine of both nations, the Neverendians were renowned for implementing an organised battle line strategy and being one step ahead in terms of technology, while the Illusians often employed paralytic combat strategies by aiming at Neverendian rigging and constructed massive man-of-wars (which had vulnerabilities that the Neverendians exploited).
After the war ended and with relations warming up, the two navies engaged in joint naval exercises, with the Neverendians offering newer technologies to the Illusians, and teaching Illusian naval officials newer combat tactics. After the Enigmastadt Declaration, the two navies ceased to exist, having being assimilated into what is now the Royal Illuverendian Navy. At its early days, the navy slowly transited to steam-powered vessels, eventually crossing into ironclads in the mid-19th century.
