The Revolutionary Defence Forces (Stedorian: Jelodanefs Levolutik), are the armed forces of the Stedorian People's Republic. It is tasked with defending the independence and interests of the Stedorian government, the defence of citizens abroad, and engaging in warfare. They encompass the Ground Defence Forces, the Air Defence Forces, the Naval Defence Forces, the Security Forces, and the Popular Combat Groups.
The Revolutionary Defence Forces are officially commanded by the Commander-in-Chief, the Chief Consul of Stedoria, currently Tamäj Köseg. However, the military on a day-to-day and warfare basis is controlled by the Ministry of National Defence in co-operation with the Stedorian Revolutionary Defence Forces General Staff, the majority compostion of which is selected by the Commander-in-Chief, and a minority of which is nominated by the country's national parliament, the National Assembly of Popular Power. All commissioned officers receive their commission from the Chief Consul of Stedoria, though generally the Ministry of National Defence or National Assembly are allowed to act on behalf of the Chief Consul in this regard.
The Revolutionary Defence Forces were founded in the aftermath of the Second Stedorian Revolution. The Royal Armed Forces of Stedoria, initially supporting the government of the Kingdom of Stedoria, turned against them on 12 December 2009, launching a military coup, deposing the monarchy and the monarchy-aligned government, briefly establishing the Self-Defence Government of the Stedorian Republic, which was soon after succeeded by the current Stedorian People's Republic.
All male citizens are required by law to serve in a branch of the Revolutionary Defence Forces for a minimum of 18 months, with very few exceptions. This is known as dünäd, (lit. service), in Stedoria.
