The Empire of the Tao Armed Forces, commonly referred to as the Taoist Armed Forces and Imperial Taoist Armed Forces, are the unified military forces of the Empire of the Tao which were established in 1928, and are controlled by the Defense Chancellory's Office, or "DCO". In recent years they have been engaged in international humanitarian efforts and participated in the recent civil uprising in 2017. New military guidelines, announced in February 2018, will direct the TAF away from its Isolationist, and purely defense focus, towards a more international, responsive focus.
History
1903-1926 (Republic)
On June 3, 1903, the leadership from the Aznazian Colonial Government in the Tao formed a political and military coalition against the United Provinces of Aznazia. The resulting declaration of independence established the Republic of the Tao as an independent nation-state which would have its own independent military forces.
The 1903 declaration of independence, was not, however, recognized or considered legal by the United Provinces of Aznazia, resulting in the War of Taoist Independence.
The Republic of the Tao Armed Forces also participated in World War I on the side of the Allied Powers. The Republic of the Tao mainly assisted through seizing Ophionian holdings controlled by the Central Powers.
1927-1947 (1st Empire)
In 1927, Emperor Takehiko passed away, and in his wake, his son, Emperor Shou was coronated as Emperor of the Tao. Emperor Shou would go on to immediately begin laying the foundations for the Empire of the Tao, this would include massive changes to the Armed Forces as well. Up until World War II the Taoist Armed Forces would begin a state of rapid modernization and expansion, propelling itself to having one of the largest militaries in Sunalaya.
1948-2018 (UST)
After World War II, the Empire of the Tao was split up into multiple occupation zones, the main ones being controlled by the Englean Kaiserreich, Rhodevus, and Aznazia. These zones would last into 1948 and during this time the nations controlling the zones were responsible for the defense of the Tao until the government of the United States of the Tao was fully organized.
In March of 2017, the Taoist Armed Forces were involved in a short civil war in the Tao. After defeating the uprising "Rengo" forces, the Nationalist party had gained considerable control over the Tao, including the Prime Chancellorship, and the Armed Forces were ordered to finish off the Rengo and take back the small island which they had been isolated to, in a very controversial attack.
2019-present (2nd Empire)
On May 16, 2019, Sora Miroyu, the Prime Chancellor at the time, had constitutionally dissolved the House of Chancellors and was coronated as Empress of the Tao. With the Empire of the Tao having been restored, the Branches of the military were renamed, but few changes to the operations of the Armed Forces were made.
Structure
The Prime Chancellor is the Commander-in-Chief of the Taoist Armed Forces and is the highest authority in the Armed Forces. Although the Prime Chancellor is supposed to (except under official state of emergencies) inform the Chancellor of Defence about any direct orders the Prime Chancellor is giving to the Armed Forces.
The Chancellor of Defence uses the Chamber of Defence and the Deputy Chancellor of Defence to help advise him or her on matters regarding the Armed Forces.
The Deputy Chancellor of Defence is not an elected leader like the Chancellor of defense, instead, he or she must be a General, Admiral, or Ace, and is appointed by a council of the Chancellor of Defence, the Prime Chancellor, and the Chancellor of Foreign Affairs. This person may act as a field officer, commanding a fleet or army if need be.
Contoversy
EMP development program
On August 7th, 2017, the UST began testing a new ship-launched EMP device, which had the potential to wipe out all electronics within a 20-mile radius, just 400 miles off the coast of Sunrisia. The test was ordered by the short-lived nationalist government and attracted condemnation from many nations around the world, including countries like Rezua, and Pantorrum. The end result was the collapse of the Nationalist government, after a scandal came to light, exposing concentration camps built by the Nationalists in the Tao.
