The Department of National Defence is a federal government department in the Caldan Union. It supports and supervises the Royal Caldan Armed Forces in defending the nation, its allies, and its interests abroad. The department is responsible to Parliament through the minister of national defence, presently Richard Byrd. The associate minister is the minister of veterans' affairs, currently Daniel Little. The permanent civilian head of the department is the deputy minister, [[
Personnel directly employed by the department are part of the professional Civil Service and are considered distinct from the uniformed armed services. However, the department is considered the headquarters of the armed forces. Under the principle of civilian control over the military, the prime minister, the deputy prime minister, the minister of national defence, the associate minister of national defence, the deputy minister of national defence, and the various associate deputy ministers, are all considered part of the chain of command.
