List of airports in Menghe
This is a list of airports in Menghe, sorted by location and classification. In addition to all airports registered with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, it also includes most civil and military airfields.
Classification
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MoTC) classifies airports and airfields into the following categories based on capacity and role. Note that in official Menghean terminology, the term airport (gonghang) is reserved for a facility that is authorized by the MoTC to handle commercial air transport on regularly-scheduled routes, while airfield (bihaengjang) covers aerodromes that handle smaller volumes .
- Primary airports (주요 공항 / 主要空港, Juyo Gonghang) are major airports handling large volumes of regularly scheduled civil air traffic. The term includes hub airports and most international airports, though not all international airports are primary airports.
- Regional airports (지방 공항 / 地方空港, Jibang Gonghang) handle smaller volumes of traffic or smaller aircraft in general, but still offer regularly scheduled passenger flights. Some have customs and border control facilities, allowing them to serve as international airports despite their smaller travel volumes.
- Civil airfields (범용 비행장 / 汎用飛行場, Bŏmyong Bihaengjang) are public or private aerodromes that primarily serve general aviation and aerial work and possess permanent fueling, service, and air traffic control facilities. They may also serve certain kinds of on-demand commercial traffic, such as air charter, air taxi, and air cargo services, but not regularly scheduled air travel routes.
- Military airfields (군사 비행장 / 軍事飛行場, Gunsa Bihaengjang) are airbases run exclusively by and for the Menghean armed forces, namely, the Menghean Army (Army Aviation), Menghean Navy (Naval Aviation), and Ministry of National Defense Troops (Strategic Logistics Agency). Dual-use sites where military and civilian aircraft share runways and taxiways are generally categorized under their civilian classification, with the military hangars, bunkers, and fueling sites classified as a military base attached to the airport or airfield.
- Airstrips (가설 비행장 / 架設飛行場, Gasŏl Bihaengjang) are aerodromes that lack permanent facilities for basing and operating aircraft, but can support takeoffs and landings with little or no preparation. The term mainly applies to grass and dirt runways in remote areas; deactivated military airfields which have not been redeveloped; and certain straight, level sections of road designated as airstrips by the MoTC and MoND. Such airstrips may be used for dispersal of military aircraft, emergency landings, and rare deliveries and charter flights to remote work sites and settlements.
