2005 marked the beginning of a standard electoral year, with Nikola Tesla officially dissolving the Chamber of Representatives and bringing forth a new general election. With Nikola Tesla running for re-election, a majority of electoral analysts predicted an easy victory considering the popular image of the scientist within the country and the campaign focused on who would form the official opposition.
Election Issues
A major issue of the election campaign was the speed at which Malgrave was opening to the international community, the Progressive-Unity Party supported the current measured rate of progress while the Green Party and the Socialist Party called for an increase in the speed of this process. On the other side, the Conservative-Action Party called for a gradual slowing while the Technology Party called for an academic review to be held to determine if this process was proceeding with the correct measure of urgency.
Secondly, the issue of internal security was large with parties outlining their steps to handle the continuing insurgency. Socialists and the Green Party called for more importance to be held on dialogue with insurgent forces which was met with strong criticism and praise from a variety of internal groups. The Progressive Unity Party promoted the continuation of the TDF-led campaign against the insurgents alongside a general offer of rehabilitation for those that wanted to return to civilian life which faced some criticism, while the Conservative Party called for an increased aggressive campaign. In a move which surprised nobody, the Technology Party called for an academic review to determine the best course of action.
Campaigns
Progressive Unity Campaign
The Progressive Unity Party was greatly aided by the continued strong growth of the economy, and the fact that the troubles of the Lost Decade were still vivid in the mind of many voters. It also undoubtedly benefited from the fact that Nikola Tesla was running to be Prime Minister for another term, although, it also focused on up-and-coming politicians like Eliot Reymont.
Its messaging focused on maintaining an experienced leader to help guide the nation towards its long-term goals, with the popular phrase Ascension on the Horizon becoming associated with the campaign.
Conservative Campaign
The Conservative Action Party was harmed by some internal disputes within the party, with radical factions wishing to promote a campaign of privatisation and deregulation similar to that attempted in the 70s, however, the more moderate faction of the party won that power struggle and so the campaign focused on bringing greater efficiencies to existing enterprises and promoting the growth of the private sector.
It was a moderately successful campaign, however, the internal divides within the party often resulted in mixed messages being sent out and at the end stage of the campaign, a few moderates resigned citing a hostile takeover by the radical faction which was led by Harold Griffin.
Green Party
The Green Party initially started their campaign speaking about the potential environmental damage caused by the construction of several new cities in the Research Colony, however, eventually expanded its campaign to talk about poorer transport connections in rural parts of Malgrave and the importance of establishing strong trade links with nations in Mystria.
It was greatly aided by the continuing collapse of the Technology Party and increased support from areas that had traditionally voted for the Conservative Action Party.
Technology Party
The Technology Party experienced terrible woes, as the party's perceived inability to create a strong stance on important issues hurt them deeply with voters. A large portion of Malgraveans also blamed the Technology Party for a portion of the troubles experienced during the Lost Decade.
Other Parties
The Future Party called for an immediate reversal of the decision to end isolationism, although, it paradoxically called for a more aggressive military campaign against Imeriata including support for freedom fighters in the Imerian colonies.
The Agricultural Coalition called for more focus on the export of vital goods to Mystria and for friendly relations between Imeriata and Malgrave to be established. It also called for greater restrictions to be placed on the import of foreign materials in a similar look to Imerian regulations.
