Gondar or Gonder (Mehare: ጎንደር, Gonder, pronounced [gon'dɛɾ]), officially the Free City of Gondar (Mehare: ነፃ:የጎንደር:ከተማ, Net͟sa yeGonder ketema) is the capital city and most populous municipality and administrative divsion of Habasha. Together with the surrounding Selale County, the city forms the Gondar Metropolitan Area, Habasha's largest urban conurbation, home to one quarter of the country's popualation.
Gondar was founded in 1867 by Neguse Negest Yohannes IV to replace Asmara as the new seat of the imperial court. Gondar's location was favourable to the imperial campaigns to conquer and pacify the Galla chiefdoms during the Grass War campaigns (1864-1877).
