Nunaaqqinit (/nu'nɑkɪnit/; Nunaaqqinitun: ᓄᓈᖅᕿᓂᑦ, IPA: /nu'nɑ:q:enit/), officially the Association of Free Peoples and formerly known by exonyms Noonak and The Habakkuk Isles, is a confederation of communes located in the far north of Norumbria in Ajax. Bordering Concordia on its southeastern corner and the Skaldafen Confederation on its southernmost exclave of Ingaliq, Nunaaqqinit is the only nation in the world in which most of the climate is tundra. Its geography is centered on the Gulf of Nunaaqqinit, anchored to the north by the Muskox Archipelago, on the west by the Northwest Country, on the east by the Blackberry Country.
What would become Nunaaqqinit was one of the last regions of the world to be settled, with evidence of human habitation dating back only 5,000 years. The first settlers of the region were semi-nomadic hunters, forming small communities and rarely engaging in warfare. In 1243, Desna, a woman from the village of Qaaqtaq, established the Desnaic Empire, which came to control much of northern Nunaaqqinit. Its rule was known for its brutality and exploitation of the people, and after its overthrow in the Cloudberry Revolution, it established a quasi-anarchist system of government. Nunaaqqinit is notable for its government, a freely-associated confederation of 47,763 communes. While each commune is administered independently of the other, the entire nation is represented on the international stage by the people's commissary, a largely ceremonial role, and wide-reaching intranational matters are administered by Communes United, a parliament of representatives from each of Nunaaqqinit's 521 regions. This system was established following the end of the Cloudberry Revolution, based on traditional Nunaaqqinimmiut village management and modified eight times over the years, eventually adopting ideas from anarchist schools of thought concerning social justice and sustainability.
13 million people live in Nunaaqqinit, making it the least densely populated nation in Ajax, at only four people per square kilometer. The majority of this population lives on the Blackberry Coast, a metropolitan area of 7 million people centered on the capital city of Qigiqtaq, due to its relatively mild climate and its small amount of arable land. The Muskox Archipelago and Northwest Country are very sparsely populated, home to less than fifth of the nation's population, although that number is rising rapidly. The vast majority of Nunaaqqinimmiut are ethnically indigenous to the nation; small non-native populations can be found on the Blackberry Coast, mostly political refugees from Norumbria and Belisaria.
Nunaaqqinit is a developed nation, with its urban population enjoying high standards of life and education. Its rural population, however, much of it still semi-nomadic, faces far-reaching problems in infrastructure development and economic advancement. The nation is universally economically equal, however, due to its socialist economy, and its population is one of the healthiest and longest-lived in Ajax, due to a world-renowned healthcare system.
