The VFL National League is the second-highest division in the VFL and represents Tier 2 of the Vionna-Frankenlischian football league system. The League is contested by 24 clubs from all over Vionna-Frankenlisch and operates by the standard VFL promotion and relegation system, being placed between the Crown League and the VFL First League. Seasons run from August to May with each team playing 46 matches (playing all 23 other teams both home and away). The National League is one of the contributing football leagues to the Imperial Cup, a competition drawn from the associations of the Frankenlischian Commonwealth.
The National League was founded in 1974 as part of Culture Minister John Marton's series of reforms. At the time of its foundation, the league was known as the United League and promotion was to the Worker's League and relegation was to the First League.
