The Saint-Baptiste Reform Party (Principean: Parti réformiste de la Saint-Baptiste), more commonly referred to by the acronym PAREF, is a liberal political party in Saint-Baptiste. PAREF is one of two main parties in Saint-Baptiste, alongside the Baptistois Liberal Party. At present, the party forms the official opposition, holding five seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Although the main parties in the country differ little in terms of ideology, PAREF is often considered the more liberal organization, with a populist bent. Foreign media often refers to the party as liberal, catch-all, and in favour of social welfare.
History
The Saint-Baptiste Reform Party was found in January of 1991 as a merger of various reform-minded NGOs and activists, with left-wing activist Joseph Morin heading the new party into the 1991 presidential and parliamentary elections. PAREF won both elections handily, becoming the dominant political force in Saint-Baptiste during the early 1990s opposite the rival Baptistois Liberal Party.
