History
Discovery and Early Colonization
The lands now comprising Alagarve were first discovered by Tomas Breogán de Cilves, an explorer and sailor in the service of the King of Lusitania. Breogán founded the first city in New Lusitania, which he named for his hometown of Cilves. Originally known as Porto de Novo Cilves, the name was later shortened to Porto Cilves following the War of Independence.
