The Southwest province (Syfwes in Vyvlander, Zuidwest in Dutch) is a province of Vyvland located in the Southwestern part of the country. It is the warmest province by temperature, with much tourism around the resort towns of Jelkym and Lyborg in the province's south. The largest cities are Jesel, which is also the capital, Jelkym and Olsence, which lies in a large industrial coalfield area in the centre of the province.

Economy

The province's southern coast is popular with tourists, whose income has transformed the previously-poor coastal city of Jelkym into a hub for the region. Olsence and its vicinity have historically been Vyvland's centre of coal-mining, while the steep mountain valleys of Lyseval and Hoppeval are gem-mining regions. However, the decline of the coal industry has led to relative poverty in the coalfields, but new nuclear power stations have been built in the area to offset this. Jesel's commercial and tourist sectors are particularly large due to its ease of access and position as the former South Vyvland's largest city.

Geography

Central Southwest province is dominated by a low-lying marshy plain, with valleys to the north, east and west sides. The east of the province, around Lysemaaf, is mountainous, with Lyseval and Hoppeval running southwards into the sea, while the Ted river runs northwards through the old coalfields around Olsence, Southwest province's third-largest city. Tall chalk and limestone cliffs dominate province's the western coastline, while in the far north the mountains give way to Vyvland's central plain. Jesel lies at the foot of the mountains, on the River Fule.

Parts of the far south are sealed off to public habitation due to their mild contamination with debris from South Vyvlander nuclear tests in the early 1960s. However, the concentration of radioactive isotopes has declined in recent years, and there are plans to open up the area over the next decade.

Government

Due to the diversity of the province, it is something of a four-way marginal between the Liberals, Conservatives, Socialists and Nationals, although in recent years, the Liberals have had the edge over the other three parties. The Provincial Diet is currently controlled by a Liberal-Socialist-Green coalition.
