Tōnobe was an dreadnought battleship built for the Republic of the Tao Navy (RTN) during the late 1910s. While the ship was designed to be built as a full class of ships, this was determined as "unnecessary". The Republic of the Tao had felt that the Iwanai-class battleship was almost as capable of the Tōnobe-class and construction could be started more ships of the older class immediately. It is unknown how many of this class the RTN planned to build, but it is known that three additional Iwanai class battleships were built instead.
