The 1973 Besmenian presidential election took place on 11 March 1973 in Besmenia. The 11th Besmenian presidential election, which originally would have taken place in April 1975, had to be presented three years earlier due to the sudden death of President Thomas Albrecht in January 1973.

The BVP nominated the Summingian Govenor Kurt Weimer. The SDU nominated the former Federal Minister for Finance Uwe Lögermann. Erwin Pohl, who served as Federal Foreign Minister from 1964 to 1972, ran as an independent candidate. Pohl won the election with 56.3%. He served as president until 1985.

This was the last presidential election in Besmenia where the voting age was 20. On January 1, 1974, the voting age was lowered to 18.

Background

Electoral system

The President of Besmenia is directly elected by the population once every six years. The election is held under a two-round system; if no candidate receives more than 50% of votes cast in the first round, then a second ballot occurs in which only those two candidates who received the greatest number of votes in the first round may stand.
