The Imperial coat of arms of Lyncanestria since the accession of Robert II.

The Lyncanestrian monarchy can be traced to the Proclamation of 1865. Issued by Philippe V of Barrois, it declared a united Empire following the Lyncanestrian League's victories in their war for independence from Vannois who sought to form a more centralized grip on the western princes of the former Holy Audonian Empire. The monarchy was codified with the Constitution, in which a monarchy was formally established and whose powers became regulated by law.

The succession to the Imperial Crown is delineated in Article 2 of the constitution, which creates a constitutional and elective monarchy. The elective monarch rules for life, or until deemed incapacitated. For most of its history, the Lyncanestrian monarchy has been held by the Villeneuve House of Barrois.

In 1928, the Federal Council elected the first woman Empress regnant, Queen Catherine of Barrois, who remains the only woman to date elected monarch. Her son, Robert I, remains the only foreign-born Lyncanestrian monarch elected emperor.

Since 6 July 2013, the emperor of Lyncanestria has been Philippe IV.
