Adel City (pronounced [əˈdɛl]; Te Rova Kadlarach: Mbiet an Adhelart [viːt ɑn ɑ'ðɛlɑːt]; Te Rova Lainer: Te Tulotose Korangha [tɛ tʉlo'tosɛ ko'ɾɑŋɑ], lit. "the western lakes"), or simply Adel, is the second-most populous city in South Neviersia and the largest city in The West Layners. As of 2024, the city has an estimated population of 1,821,000 and a wider metropolitan population of 3,566,000. Other major population centres within the metropolitan area include Tunley, Chatsworth, Wenworth, Clifton and the city of Port Mateagh. Adel City is currently governed by Adel City Council, whose mayor, Tioran Utork of the Conservative Party, was elected in 2020.

The city is situated in the southern foothills of the Perthian Hills and the Adhelart floodplains, where the River Wynthorpe and River Adhelart flow through. With more than 350 parks, woodlands and urban gardens in the city, and over 26% of forest cover, Adel is one of the greenest cities in South Neviersia. Adel is 54 km east of the border with Manima, 77 kilometres northwest of Port Mateagh, 179 kilometres west of Ossett, 557 kilometres northeast of Bondulagh and 662 kilometres west of Darwinschtad.

Adel was the capital of British Neviersia during the 1800s and was the prime destination for wealthy European settlers, especially in the city's south and east. The north and west were settled by working-class Europeans in the cotton and mining industries. Many Lainerovans who lived in the region prior to European colonisation were expelled, although a minority of the Te Lainer Larishoma tribe were resettled in Tork, Aberkershaw and Taraghoghill. Most Lainerovans resisted expulsion, albeit being threatened or persecuted and tortured. Following a successful overthrowing of the Parliament in 1912 and the subsequent transition to dominionhood, the seat of government was relocated to Darwinschtad. The Old Parliament House was repurposed into a heritage museum.

Adel is considered the financial and cultural heart of The West Layners, extending into southern Perth Country and eastern Lainerovan Kadlara. There are five major universities in the city, including Adel University, which has one of the highest student enrolments in the country. Adel also has the highest international student population and continues to attract an influx of migrants each year, facilitated by the region having a higher preference of English over Lainerovan as a primary language.

Adel has two major motorway links, such as the M40 Adel Circular Motorway, the M42 Jondorophilly Motorway and the M43 Mateagh Motorway, providing links to Perth Country, Lainerovan Kadlara and other south coast regions via the M1. The city's public transport system includes suburban rail, buses, ferries and a tram network. There are also multiple national and international rail services, such as CrossRova, which has a cross-border commuter rail line from Adel City Centre to the town of Tauihapon, Manima.

Etymology

The name Adel is the short-form of the name of the Nevyirist dragon 'Adhelart'. The official Te Rova Lainer name of the city, Te Tulotose Korangha, translates to "the western lakes", referring to Adel's numerous lakes, including the largest one, Lake Adel.

Climate

As with most of south Neviersia, Adel has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with hot and humid summers and mild winters. Due to its inland position and proximity to the Perthian Hills and Lake Adel, the temperature and humidity differ from most coastal cities.

Population

The residents of Adel (both the City and County) are known as Adelians. The term "Adelschtader" is sometimes used by Darwinschtaders to specifically refer to residents of Adel City, although this is seldom used by the residents themselves.
