Anaryssia is a polytheistic religion and philosophical ideology indigenous to Northern Belisaria that teaches that the fate of humanity is to be decided between a climatic battle between the two survivors of the Anaryssian Pantheon following a war for control of the highest plane of existence, Amorha: Lady Rukka (the Matron of Honor, Integrity and Self-Sacrifice) and her brother Lord Saadrim (the Patron of Assault, Murder and Warfare). Its adherents, known as Anaryssians, believe that those souls pledged to Rukka on the mortal plane of Sedrima will be raised up in the final battle between good and evil. The religion is practiced by more than 32.5 million followers, mostly in its native Cynereth; many more adhere to the philosophic teachings of the faith tradition without ascribing veracity to its supernatural claims.
Anaryssia began as an oral tradition passed down from the mountainous tribes of the Cauzen Range in modern-day Cynereth. Its explosive growth in the 10th Century CE under the leadership of the first Aunura, Tamsen of Hannaria facilitated the weaving of the religious oral tradition into the growth of the Concordance of Cynereth as a sovereign power. The growth of the faith tradition continued in stride with the Concordance, culminating in Cynereth’s participation in the Northern Crusades in the 13th Century CE.
The decline of the Concordance’s political power in Northern Belisaria coincided with the rise of a schism between the religious Celmisans and the agnostic-philosophical Veladines, who began to question the legitimacy of the faith’s supernatural teachings, yet retained its moral anecdotes and sociocultural principles. The Age of Disunion between the 14th and 18th Centuries CE led to significant internal turmoil and civil strife between the two factions, until the Council at Bemarlenn in May 1725 resolved the disputes and facilitated a more-stable coexistence between Anaryssian adherents and their agnostic/deist counterparts. Today, the Celmisan tradition has continued to thrive as the state religion of Cynereth and its primary engine for organization and governance, while the Veladines have received greater validation and support from the Aunuras in Laeleath.
Anaryssia remains the largest religion by far in Cynereth, with more than 80% of the population claiming some degree of belief in the religion or its philosophical teachings. The religion’s spread beyond Cynereth has been slow, owing to its close ties to the development of the Cynerethic tribes in Belisaria. The opening of religious pluralism laws in Cynereth in the 20th Century CE have further weakened the faith’s hold over the Cynerethic peoples.
