Lower Tariel, officially the City of Lower Tariel, is a city on the Northern Isle of Zamastan, and is also the nation's 12th most populous city. As of the 2018 census-estimate, it has a population of 433,000. Founded in 1817, Lower Tariel was established as a remote fishing village. The city has been the site of many battles in conflicts between Zamastan and Gladysynthia, including the 1945 Danaska Conflict, The Tariel War, and the Gladysynthia Crisis. By the time it was granted city status in 1888, it was a major center of Zamastanian linen production, tobacco-processing and rope-making. Shipbuilding was also a key industry. It also has a major aerospace and missiles industry.
Throughout the 21st century, the city has seen a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years and has benefited from substantial economic and commercial growth. Lower Tariel remains a center for industry, as well as the arts, higher education, business, and law, and is the economic engine of the Northern Isle. Tourism is one of the city's biggest industries. Lower Tariel is still a major port, with commercial and industrial docks dominating the shoreline.
