The Royalists was the common name given to the Syaran military forces that supported the Royal Families of Galania and Makedon during the Refusal War. A mixture of volunteer militias and professional soldiers from the Army of the Syaran Republic, the Royalists were opposed by the revolutionary Wardens who sought the overthrow of all Monarchist elements in Syara.
The Royalists originated as officers of the armed forces of the Republic of Syara whom elected to remain loyal to the Royal Families of Galania and Makedon after they were ordered to hand over their estates and titles to the Warden dominated Syaran Senate. As the officer corps of the Syaran Armed Forces was composed primarily of ethnic Makedonians and Galanians, roughly 2/3rds of Syaran officers sided with the Royalists. Volunteers and conscripts from within Royalist territory rounded out Royalist formations, and at their peak the Royalists fielded 1.5 million men under arms.
The Royalists began the war with a significant advantage in arms and experience, leading to early victories between 1984-1985. In 1986 the increasingly larger Warden armies inflicted several decisive defeats on the Royalists, forcing them back into Galania and Makedon. In 1987 the Wardens invaded Galania, destroying the bulk of Royalist forces in the Realm and capturing many major cities and strategic locations. With most members of the Royal Family fleeing in September 1987, the Royalist forces began to collapse. The last bastions of the Royalist armies surrendered in late September and early October, with hostilities concluding on 4 October 1987.
