The Special Action Group (Radictistani:Spezialeinsatzgruppe) is the premier counterterrorism and special operations unit of the Radictistani Royal Security Police.
Missions
The Special Action Group is assigned the following missions:
- Resolution of kidnapping and hostage situations
- Seizure of terrorist or criminal safehouses in situations with a high likelihood of armed resistance
- Apprehension of armed suspects
- Protection of high value government installations in times of high national alert
- (wartime) Location and apprehension of foreign infiltrators
A troop of the SAG was deployed to Ursava in 2010 in response to an aircraft hijacking which threatened the lives of Radictistani citizens. The situation was resolved without the SAG operators firing a shot. The unit has been placed on standby on several occasions as part of the government's respons to Communist terrorism in Norcustsur. Only twice have SAG operators fired in anger. The first incident resulted in the killing of two militants as they fled from the scene of a bank robbery committed to finance their operations. The second kinetic operation was the unit's participation in Operation Firebird, a major offensive operation in Hartfer aimed at shutting down the Communist Party's bomb-making units. A key bomb maker was apprehended by the SAG team after a brief firefight. One SAG operator was killed during the operation.
Publicly known operations
- 2010: Deployment to Ursava in response to the hijacking of Flight 442. The situation was resolved peacefully.
- June 5, 2012: SAG team responded to a bank robbery carried out by the KPR. Two militants were fatally shot while attempting to flee the scene.
- July 17, 2013: SAG snipers provided overwatch for other RSP units conducting a search through an apartment tower in Luerkraft.
- September 5, 2013: SAG team raided a warehouse in Hartfer under suspicion of housing a KPR bombmaking facility. No KPR personnel were in the warehouse but some bomb materials were discovered.
- October 31, 2013: Operation Firebird. Three SAG teams (roughly 35 personnel) inserted into Hartfer blutstat to apprehend a KPR bombmaker. The target was successfully seized and four other KPR cadres shot. One SAG operator was shot during the operation and died while being evacuated.
Organization
The Special Action Group has a modular structure. The entire unit is divided into three Squadrons, two based in Nuxenstat and a third at Hartfer. Each Squadron is divided further into three Troops which function as the basic operational unit. A troop conists of an eight-man assault team, two marksmen, and a tactical operations center manned by twenty-eight support personnel. The assault team is usually split into two four-man fireteams. The headquarters unit consists of armourers, EOD specialists, and other support members.
Recruitment and training
Any officer or enlisted policeman of the Royal Security Police with at least three years of service can apply for a spot in the SAG selection and training process. A majority of SAG candidates come from the Bereitschaftbataillone, the primary rapid response units of the RSP. The two week selection course allows the instructors to evaluate the candidate's stamina, reflexes, and judgment through a variety of obstacle courses, tactical drills, and other tests of physical and mental strength. Upon successful completion of the selection course, the candidate undertakes the sixteen week training course. The training course emphasizes the successful resolution of hostage situations, the apprehension of armed suspects, and other delicate close-quarters combat situations. Only about thirty percent of candidates successfully complete the course and become members of the group.
Equipment
The Special Action Group uses much the same personal equipment as the rest of the Royal Security Police. SAG operators most frequently use the H&K UMP submachine gun and the G36 assault rifle on assault operations.
The Royal Security Police operates two An-26B transport aircraft exclusively for rapid long-distance deployment of the Special Action Group.
