Seleucus IX Callinicus Theos Philopator Theos Philometor Soter Euergetes (April 12, 3 – February 3, 75) was a ruler of the Seleucid Empire and Macedonna that reigned from 18 to 75, and 58 to 75 respectively. He was one of the more formidable rulers of the Empire as he expanded its territories with numerous victories, an effort compared to that of Antiochus the Great. During his reign, he often provided benefits to those he conquered, with the exception of the Valkyrur, enacted favorable welfare policies, and sponsored scientific innovation, being that he was found of science, making him a popular ruler.
More notably, he was the wielder of one of the most powerful weapons of the ancient times, the Staff of Seleucus. This resulted in a cult of personality revolving around him, and his deification after his death; moreover, because of this idealization, he is often referred to as Anicetus ("The Invincible") and, ceremonially, the "Son of Athena"; the former epithet would become a permanent title for the subsequent rulers.
