Combat Cross Second Class Ribbon

The Combat Cross Second Class is a military award issued by the Lumenic Legion to members of the nation's armed forces who perform an "Heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone." In addition to being awarded to active duty or reserve members of the Lumenic Legion, the Combat Cross Second Class can be awarded to foreign soldiers who have served with or alongside a the Lumenic Legion in a combat zone. Civilians serving with military forces in combat are also eligible for the Combat Cross Second Class.

History

In 1973, the Lumenic Air Force and Lumenic Armada instituted a policy under which pilots and naval aviators and their combat systems officers flying fighter aircraft, were considered eligible to receive the Combat Cross First Class upon becoming an ace; having five or more confirmed aerial kills. This became standard practice that same year, with a Combat Cross First Class being awarded to any pilot and his CSO who achieved five aerial kills. In 1976, the Lumenic Air Force attempted to expand this practice to include awarding the Combat Cross Second Class to any pilot and CSO upon achieving their first aerial kill. The Legatus of the Legion at the time, Moreno D’Azzo ordered that practice halted, stating that tying the awarding of a military award for valor to a single, defined act, made the award nearly worthless. However, prior to the Legatus' order, nearly 50 medals had been awarded. The Legatus choose not to roder the already issued medals to be rescinded, but instead ordered the practice be abandoned. This practice led to the establishment of the Air Combat Award and Naval Combat Action Award in 1979.

Awarding and eligibility

The Combat Cross Second Class will be awarded to any qualified person who distinguished, or has distinguished, herself or himself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service to the nation of Luminerra while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing force, or while serving with an allied force fighting an opponent that is not a declared enemy of Luminerra. The acts of heroism are of a lesser degree than required for the award of the Combat Cross First Class. Traditionally, the Combat Cross Second Class is awarded for a single conspicuous act of heroism in combat, whereas the Combat Cross First Class is awarded for actions over an extended period of time, typically a 1-2 day period.

The Combat Cross Second Class can be award more than once to the same recipient. If an individual receives more than one Combat Cross Second Class then the ribbon would display a Rosetón device.
