The Foederati Vis Defensionis (Federal Defence Force) is the military force of the Grand Federal Imperium of Adaptus. It consists of the Custodes Foederati, Foederati Custodes Nauticis, Foederati Custodes Aeria, Medicinae Custodes Foederati, Foederati Nauticis Custodes Kosmos, Informationes Officium Bellica, Insuetam Officium Bellica, as well as auxiliary forces. Executive command of the Foederati Vis Defensionis residing in the Principalis Militaris, a position which is elected every 3 years. In turn the Principalis Militaris is under the directive of the Adapton Caesar, who forms the overall military policy along with the Academiae Militaris Belli. Throughout it’s history the Military of Adaptus has played a pivotal role in the overall history of Adaptus, both during its antiquity, and throughout the near-modern and modern history. Additionally the military of Adaptus greatly influenced the military of the Aroman Empire during its existence. Today the military forms a core part of Adpaton culture and society, being not only a defensive force, but a key source of civil services, such as healthcare, education, and law and order. In addition to defensive, and internal civil duties, the military of Adaptus conducts numerous operations overseas, and around the world, such as anti-piracy and anti-slavery operations, rescue, and relief operations, and peacekeeping.

The Adapton armed forces draws its personnel form an entirely paid volunteer force, and recruits both males and females in all roles. The minimum recruitment age for Adaptons to join the armed forces is 16, however a long and rigorous education and training programme is followed after recruitment at this age, with most service personnel not seeing full time service until the age of 22.

As of a 2017 census, the Adapton Military spend is around æ650 Billion (Aureses) per year, which equated to around 10.3% of GDP that year. Due to this, the Adapton Armed Forces has significant capabilities in both defence and power projection, resulting in advanced and powerful technologies which enables a widespread deployment of the force around the world, with the Adapton Military having many overseas bases.

History

The Adapton Military can trace its origins as far back as the Ancient Thessenic City States, and the Alexandrian Empire. Upon the fall of the Alexandrian Empire and the rise of the Aroman Republic and subsequent Aroman Empire, troops were raised from throughout the historical Thessenic states, and formed a large part of the Aroman Empire into its fall.

Into the middle ages, Adaptus fractured into city states, as did any unified military. Most of the city states continued the ethos of the Aroman Empire, in carrying some form of professional military class well into the late middle ages.

The first instance on a unified Adapton Military is documented in 1583, when the Kingdom of Adaptus was formed from the merger of several city states. It was at this time, we see the first references to a colloquial Adapton Army in the form of the Agmenae Adaptii, which roughly translated into Adapton Muster, or Adapton March. This force was mostly a collection of levied men from the city states tasted with the defence of the newly formed Kingdom.

Up until this point, many of the city states had formal navies, which partook in many of the early expeditions in “The Rediscovery” of the west. However, there did not exist a formal unified Adapton Navy. The exact date is not known, however it is widely accepted that at the turn of the 17th century, a formal navy was established in order to begin a larger scale colonisation operation into the west.

Upon the start of the Great Adapton War, this loose formation of a military was disbanded. And by 1621, there was no longer a formal unified Adapton military as the City States broke out into mass warfare. For the next thirty years throughout the course of the Great Adapton War, city states, advanced their militaries considerably and formed highly professional fighting forced, and the first signed of a large scale professional military since Aroman times was established in the Alexandrian Realm.

Upon the end of the Great Adapton War, and the Peace of Westeia, when the new Kingdom of Adaptus was established, as part of the peace, a professional army to fit the new state was formulated in order to prevent the collapse of the Kingdom. In addition to a formal army, the Peace of Westeia also established a new Adapton Navy, which rekindled its attempts at wider colonisation.

This formal military evolved overtime into a formidable force during the mid 19th century through to the mid 20th century, where especially during the Long War, established itself as a formidable and relevant force, and the doctrine of adaptable and dynamic offence and counter attack was first developed. It was also during this time that the preference for being abreast of technological advanced began. The core of what is today the FVD was formed during this modern golden era of the Adapton Military.

The late 20th century saw a large decline in the formal military of Adaptus. Integral strife, and several civil wars, including the Fatherist Coup, and AdSoc Crisis. This saw much of the core of the military remain. Especially during the AdSoc Crisis, where an ethos of professionalism and experience was established, centred around a nexus of highly experienced, and well trained military professionals. This force formed around the former King Carolus, and became known as the Adapton Exile Force. Many of who went onto to form the bulk of the College of Principals upon its inception in the early 21st century.
