Demescia, officially the Federal Commonwealth of Demescia, is a sovereign island country in central Meterra. It is a federation composed of twelve domains, altogether spanning 421,016 km² and neighboring Naizerre to the south and Sasten to the north. It is the eleventh largest country and the thirteenth most populous country, with a population of around 75 million. Combre is the capital, while Katulinoj is the most populous municipality with a population of over 6.4 million (followed by Verkas, which has a population of 6.3 million).

Demescia hosts a wide array of warm biomes, including southwestern chaparral and shrub-steppe as well as humid highlands and temperate rainforest in the north. Demescia also has a central mountain range, the Kohekuzleno, its highest mountain being Mount Kustro with a height of 6,614 meters. The variance in geography has spawned a range of vernacular architecture, including yurts (found natively in the central mountains and the steppes), trulli (found in southeastern Ojoso) and carpenter gothic architecture (found almost everywhere on the island).

Demescian history dates back to circa 3,000 BCE, when Naizerri and other seafarers explored the island. The Naizerri that settled the bays of Homojo morphed into the Lithonian ethnic. Skandans that settled the east coast became known as the Maku'i. It is believed that the Sifrites descended from the Aed Kaene that settled on the island thousands of years ago. The Lithonians eventually dispersed into different clans and city-states, each struggling for control over the region until the first Byysqeq reunified most of them.

Circa 247 BCE, Skandans canoed to the island, trading food and spice for metals with the natives, initiating a natural cultural exchange. Octarchy states from what is now Syrixia also initiated trade, between 100 and 0 BCE. The Sastennic Empire, which also traded in Demescia at the time, and Skandan traders fiercely protested this.

During 16th and 17th centuries, Demescia became a venue of colonization and imperialism. The largest empires to take hold were the United Kingdom of Andrenne and Goyanes and the Syrixian Empire. Eventually a sovereign state of Demescia came into fruition in 1987, then being known as the Communities of Demescia. It gradually gained more territory as empires ceded their land throughout the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the last of which being Syrixia.

Demescia is a founding member of META and a second-tier member of the (Syrixian) Commonwealth. It is a developed country with a high standard of living and an advanced economy composed of information technology, mass media, agriculture, engineering, retail and textiles. It also has rising tourism and entertainment industries.

Etymology

Demescia is Mercanti for the Roru word for the island "Demešyya" (pronounced De-me-si-a), which came from the word "Remošyya" meaning homeland of many. The name came into use to describe the island in between 300 BCE and 600 CE, especially after the first Byysqeq when the various tribes and factions were united and at peace for the first in many centuries. Esperanto eventually became the de facto national language of Demescia in the early 20th century, and "Demlando" and "Demesko" were and still are used interchangeably to refer to Demescia. The former is a portmanteau of the Roru root "Dem" (meaning many) and the Esperanto word "Lando" (meaning land).

Politics

Demescia—as defined by its constitution, the Komunumetalono—is a federal dual–presidential representative republic. It is the only dual-presidential system in Eras, with a chief premier—who serves as the head of government and makes executive decisions on domestic policy—and a delegate premier—who serves as the head of state, as well as the Commander-in-Chief of the Demescian Armed Forces, and makes executive decisions on foreign policy. Both have four-year terms with no term limits. The Demescian national government also features a bicameral legislature—the Ĉiutagejo—with an auxiliary committee composed of officially recognized Demescian scientists, specialists and pundits—the Saĝaro. While the constitution does not de jure designate a capital city, Combre is often considered the capital since it hosts both the Premiership and the Marmoro. Esseri Umani is sometimes considered a second capital as it hosts the Vulgato and the Grandekorteo, Demescia's supreme court. The Saĝaro, meanwhile, meets in Katulinoj.

This has been the structure of the government since the Demescian Constitutional Reformation of 1888, in which the previous confederate system was scrapped and replaced with the Komunumetalono as a consequence if the Hidra Revolts prior. The old republics of the confederation were to be integrated into larger federated regions called domains. As of 2018, every domain has a unicameral domanial legislature except for Nisentro and Ojoso, which each has a bicameral domanial legislature. These domains are constituted by unincorporated land and municipalities called poleis.

The Demescian judiciary possess a mixed system—a combination of common and customary law. While the federation and its constituents operate based on court decisions, certain types of municipalities (e.g. communes) within domains may apply informal or traditional law. Categories:Demescia
