The SM(S) U-1 was the first combat submarine ordered by the Kaiserliche-Marine, succeeding the research submarines that had been constructed during the 19th Century. This vessel would be the only one of her class, and would serve as the basis for following Englean submarine designs through her usage of a pressurised hull surrounding the crew compartment. The submarine would be in service until 1914, when she was deemed obsolete for further usage and was converted into a training submarine until 1922.
